Perfection – that glimmering mirage out on the horizon. We think we will reach some kind of elated status when we get there, yet it’s forever out of reach. For this reason, to preach perfection, in my humble opinion as a content creator for awesome change-makers, is cruel. What a way to crush our human spirit! However, practicing for the sake of ongoing improvement, now that’s my kind of habit-creation. Hear me out – consider why Practice Makes Progress is a healthier mantra.

What’s the Goal?

The entire reason that “Practice makes perfect” existed as a proverb was to encourage doing, by a white guy back in the 1800’s. Doing, doing, and more doing. OK. Obviously the more we work on a skill, the more we create, the more we stretch ourselves (even quite literally, looking at you, yogis), the better we get. That’s the point. Tune into the process. Do and keep doing…with mindfulness and intention. Now we’re going places. Perfection is not the goal – improvement is.

Advance to Go

As any wise good-hearted person will remind us when we feel exasperated or behind, we need to at first, recognize where we are. We don’t start from the top. Naturally, we start where we are. And the “top” will keep expanding beyond our reach. There is always a next level to achieve. The mindset shift here is, then, to find comfort and delight in that. Enjoy the progress journey with many fresh starts, wins, and shiny moments along the way. Believe me, I’ve lived many lives already. I know all about pivots and pressing the Start Over button.

Failure Is Part of the Scientific Method

So you’re setting your New Year’s Resolutions. Making lists upon lists in the remaining pages of your bullet journal. You’re gearing up for all the ways you’re going to be the best you yet. Research until your brain bursts. You’re planning for a growing business, and all the ways you’re going to make the world a better place. Love it, Change-maker! Remember to be kind to yourself, and make space for success and setbacks. Next year will not be perfect, and that’s OK. Love the process. Every day is a chance for a new experiment and learning opportunity.

Who Are the Characters in Your Success Stories?

So many entrepreneurs, business owners, and organization directors slay so hard all day they forget to highlight the victories. Success stories beget more success stories! Success stories are brand stories. I challenge you to get creative and practice sharing your wins and big impact stories, consistently, to invite in your ideal clients. Everyone loves a good story, and your next best clients want to see themselves as a star role in yours.

Can’t quite put into words all the marvels of your work? Perhaps your business plan needs to include hiring a freelance content creator like me. You do what you do best, I’ll make sure your brand content shines. Let’s discuss a progress project together. Happy New Year!
